When people begin searching for a divorce attorney, they often find significant differences in how lawyers represent their client in court. Every lawyer is unique, but three “types” seem to stand out. Michael Sherman of Alabama Family Law and Christi Trusler of Austin Divorce Help describe three main divorce lawyer styles: the Lamb, the Pitbull, and the Fox. These are general characterizations, of course, but the distinctions might be useful to keep in mind. What are they, and which style is best for you?
The Lamb: This style of attorney often promises a painless, no-fuss divorce. They will seek to resolve your situation as quickly and easily as possible. At first, that might sound wonderful; divorce is stressful enough, right? Unfortunately, these attorneys dislike confrontation, and that means they are not going to stand up for their client’s best interests. Being too eager to compromise, they are more likely to recommend you accept a weak settlement offer that does not meet your needs, in order to avoid negotiation or going to court.
The Pitbull, or Shark: As Sherman and Trusler point out, some divorce lawyers take pride in fashioning themselves a stereotypical pitbull or shark: the kind of attorney who viciously attacks and won’t loosen their grip until “the enemy” is vanquished. For people struggling with a lot of anger about their impending divorce, having a brash lawyer who promises to exact revenge on the ex in court can seem very attractive. But beware: With an attorney who just loves to fight, you are in for a long, grueling, and very expensive process that is unlikely to bring satisfaction and is sure to hurt people you love. The self-styled “pitbull” attorney may reject a good settlement offer that is in the client’s best interest.
The Fox: As Trusler says, a lawyer who behaves like a fox is “able to see the big picture. She is always aware of the consequences that her actions have on her client.” That goes for the impact on the client’s family, too. Foxes are wise and flexible, attuned to clues in the surrounding terrain. They will make every reasonable attempt to reach a fair settlement on their client’s behalf, but they are prepared to litigate in court if need be. With a savvy lawyer standing up for you, you’re more likely to get an outcome that satisfies your long-term needs.
